MATTHEW AND WILMA Mason, a married couple from San Francisco on a driving tour of southwest national parks, are found shot to death in the remote and rugged backcountry of southeast Utah. A revolver clutched in Matthew’s hand suggests a murder-suicide, but Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera thinks otherwise. In his mind, there are too many unanswered questions. Why had the Masons, at age 68, detoured from the planned vacation route shown on their map? Why had they left the comfort of paved roads for rough, gravel back roads that led to nowhere in particular? Why had they driven to the place where they were found, next to an abandoned grass airstrip? And most peculiar of all, why were they dressed like hippies from the 1960s?

DCI Nash is brought into the Serious Crimes Task Force on a case that has the local police baffled. Their quiet town has been shattered by its first-ever serial killer. The beautiful countryside is tarnished forever.

Four murders in and the psychopath nicknamed The Florist isn’t done.

The staged and bizarre murder scenes are like nothing the team has seen before - but one thing is clear: the killer is playing cat and mouse. There are no apparent links between these elaborate murders, except for the sprig of honeysuckle left at the crime scene.

As the evidence stacks up against the dying businessman Maxwell Jones, Nash thinks he’s nailed their killer. Jones has nothing to lose and wants to go out with a bang. He's young. He's angry. And he's not ready to die. Are these killings his swan song to keep his name alive?

But a mole is leaking evidence to the media, and if Nash doesn’t get on top of it soon, he’ll be ruined.

Meanwhile, Amanda Keys has a message for him . . . one that DCI Nash isn’t ready to hear.

This is not a game.

Description:

A collection of novellas and stories from Shamus Award winner Ken Bruen, author of the Jack Taylor series and the "godfather of the modern Irish crime novel" (The Irish Times). An Irishman with an ebullient love of life draws inspiration from the literature and poetry of death. A born loser with an "ex-wife, an ex-child, and no excuses" accompanies his alcoholic brother on a startling plunge into liberating despair. A self-styled vigilante avenges the death of his wife and child by waging a one-man war against the London underworld. A whiskey-sotted cleric sets out to battle his sexual demons with a resolve that borders on the malevolent. "Nobody writes like Ken Bruen," says the New York Times Book Review, and here, the author of The Emerald Lie and The Guards offers a taste of his wide-ranging skills. With his acrid barstool wit, literary allusions, and gut-punching twists, Bruen captures the Irish state of mind with bracing authenticity. Now, enthusiasts of his long-running series featuring Irish PI Jack Taylor—seven of which have been adapted for the screen—and new fans alike can discover Bruen's early works in an omnibus shaded with the crazy, violent, and melancholy poetry that has become his trademark. Hailed by the Los Angeles Book Review as one of "the most original and innovative noir voices of the last two decades," Bruen is a two-time Shamus Award winner, an Edgar Award finalist, and a recipient of the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière. A Fifth of Bruen includes: Funeral: Tales of Irish Morbidities, Martyrs, Shades of Grace, Sherry and Other Stories, All the Old Songs and Nothing to Lose, and The Time of Serena May &Upon the Third Cross.

NYPD Detective Sam Archer is on his way home on a Sunday afternoon in New York City. He’s been out of the field for over three months due to a broken ankle and a serious bout of pneumonia from a previous case, but has just been given the all clear for a return to duty, starting tomorrow. Archer takes a seat on a bench in the Upper West Side, enjoying a cold drink and soaking up the last remaining sun of the day. Then he sees something totally unexpected. Two men are crossing the street in front of him, heading quickly towards a group climbing into a car. Both men are armed with pistols. And all hell breaks loose.

Shouting a warning and racing to their aid, a ferocious gunfight erupts, shattering the peaceful afternoon. Archer and the group are forced to flee uptown in the strangers’ vehicle, their ambushers giving chase. With their tyres blown out and the car crashing, the group have no choice but to take refuge in a Harlem tenement block, situated in one of the most dangerous areas in the city. Their ambushers are right on their heels and seal off the building, preventing the NYPD from getting close as they start to arrive. Archer and the others are trapped in the building with their attackers.

Hiding out with the group from the car in an apartment upstairs, Archer starts to piece together the situation. The people he’s with are US Marshals, protecting a witness, a nine year old girl. Clearly, someone out there is desperate to kill her. But as they barricade themselves in and wait for back-up, none of them realise the full extent of the danger they are in. Others are on their way to the building, ruthless trained killers who won’t leave until the girl is dead. As the scores of NYPD and Marshals on the street desperately try to figure out how they can get to their people inside, Archer and the Marshals must fight to stay alive against increasingly hopeless odds, running out of ammunition, chances and time.

Unarmed and totally unprepared, Archer is thrown back into the fray; either kill or be killed. As they encounter the enemy, suffer casualties and Archer learns who this child witness really is, two things become abundantly clear. There’s only one way in or out of the building.

And it appears there’s only one way this can end.
