‘Yorkshire’s answer to Inspector Morse.’ The Bookseller

‘Enough to satisfy the most ardent lover of crime fiction.’ Yorkshire Evening Post

Charlie Priest isn’t your typical angst-ridden detective with a drink problem. He gets on well with his constables and has an actual sense of humour.

Yorkshire isn’t just picturesque villages and sheep stealing. Detective Priest is about to face international art scammers.

An exhibition with ten famous paintings, including a Picasso, is touring England. But four of the artworks have been secretly switched with fakes — forged by Priest’s old art teacher, Rudi Truscott.

Looks like crime doesn’t take a day off, but neither does Priest.

Before Priest can dig deeper, Truscott dies in a suspicious fire — nothing but a pile of ash remains of the poor sod.

With his only lead up in smoke, Priest needs to find the crooks . . . before they strike again.

This character-driven detective mystery full of wry humour is perfect for fans of Colin Dexter, Reginald Hill, J.R. Ellis, P.F. Ford and Roger Silverwood.

The Detective
Charlie Priest’s father and grandfather were both detectives. He is now the longest-serving detective in the small town of Heckley, Yorkshire. After a messy divorce that left him cleaned out, he uses work and his dry humour as an escape. Priest is devoted to finding crooks and watching out for his team of young constables. He hates being called sir or Mr. Priest — it makes him feel old, and don’t ever say a bad word about his old, beat-up Ford Cortina.

The Setting
Heckley is a fictional town in Yorkshire, England. Locally referred to as The Tops, Heckley has picturesque views over the rugged hills, bleak moors and narrow lanes bordered by dry-stone walls. Residents like to nip to their local pub for a pint and a chinwag about local lore.

In a quiet neighborhood in Los Angeles overlooking the Pacific Ocean—in a pristine home with lush gardens—James Brant returns from a late night at work to find his young wife, Nikki, savagely murdered in their bed.

At least that’s his story.

But for Detective Lena Gamble, thrust into the limelight as she tackles her first major case, it’s only a beginning into a dark, twisted journey and a series of ritualized killings that point to a serial killer like no other.

Dubbed ‘Romeo’ by an insatiable media, the killer’s pattern draws Lena into a treacherous web of deceit that may be linked to her own past—the murder of her rock star brother, gunned down on a dark street in Hollywood five years ago.

With panic over the murders sweeping across the city and wildfires burying the streets in clouds of smoke, Lena rips through the evidence and uncovers Romeo’s vile secret.

But now no one is safe. Not even her, as the hunter becomes the hunted, and Romeo believes only Lena Gamble can satisfy his every desire.

Out of answers and out of hope, Lena knows in her heart of hearts that there’s only one way left to end Romeo’s psychotic rampage. Face the terror head-on, and enter the madman’s world—on her own.

“City of Fire is my kind of crime novel. Gritty, tight and assured. Riding with Detective Lena Gamble through the hills of Los Angeles is something I could get used to. She’s tough, smart, and most of all, she’s real.”—Michael Connelly

Sometimes, two very different pieces of furniture just pair perfectly together. Brother and sister Cullen and Luna Bodman work much the same way. While practical-minded Cullen Bodman focuses on their family’s antiques restoration business, his sister Luna’s next-door Namaste Café brings in new clientele. As a thank you to his sister, Cullen retrieves Luna’s childhood dresser from storage and refinishes it. A delighted Luna rummages through the drawers and discovers a shoebox full of mementos of her friend Brendan, reviving memories of love and a broken heart. But a flurry of emails and texts leads to a very brief death notice: Born. Died. Nothing else. Beyond Luna’s sadness is her uncanny intuition that something about the announcement is off, a feeling that intensifies when she later glimpses a person who seems to be Brendan’s doppelganger. His laugh, his walk—Luna remembers both so well. Is her old friend really alive? And if so, who faked his death, and why? It’s not the first time an item of furniture has spurred Luna to solve a fascinating puzzle. But this time, the mystery is much more personal, and the stakes infinitely higher . . .
