A Canadian cop is up against a local femme fatale in a thriller of "fierce suspense" that launched the Fox TV and Hulu series Murder in a Small Town (Publishers Weekly). It's sunny days for Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg, even as everyone else in Canada is shivering. The magnificent Cassandra Mitchell, who has a disconcerting habit of disappearing from both the town of Sechelt and Alberg's bed, has appeared once again. And though Alberg is effectively the police chief, the most pressing thing on his desk right now is the spunky old lady who has apparently absconded from her retirement home—most likely in search of a good martini. But a storm is brewing for Alberg, just a few miles down the peninsula. Zoe Strachan, Sechelt's newest resident, is the sort of enigmatic seductress who could get away with murder. And when her ne'er-do-well brother takes a fatal tumble down her basement steps, it's time for Zoe to wrap the local law enforcement around her little finger. And while Alberg is certainly nobody's fool, this case has him tied up in knots.

“A brisk-paced legal thriller packed with twists, turns, and tension!” –Cam Torrens, award-winning author of Stable and False SummitWhen the owner and the chef of a popular diner in a small north Georgia town are found shot to death shortly before opening early one morning, Joseph Owens, a hot-tempered busboy, quickly becomes the prime suspect. District Attorney Paul Chastain, facing a serious challenge in his bid for reelection, charges Owens with the murders despite pleas from the lead detective for more time to investigate. After a hard-fought trial in which the judge allows the prosecutor to present highly emotional testimony despite the defense lawyer's objections, Owens is convicted and sentenced to death by the jury. Two Atlanta lawyers, who observed part of the trial, become convinced the prosecution's case is flimsy at best. Shocked by the outcome, they get permission from their firm's managing partner to represent Owens in his final appeal. But as the appeal drags on and costs the firm more and more in lost legal fees, tensions begin to rise. Their involvement has a drastic impact not just on Owens, but on many others involved in the case, as well as on their own lives and careers.

THE SETTING
Canvey Island, with its low-lying marshes and silent, brackish waters, feels like a place cut off from the rest of Essex. The island’s isolation, surrounded by the dark, slow-moving waters of the Thames, gives it an unsettling stillness. Sea defenses and forgotten corners of the shoreline hint at a past riddled with floods and unspoken tragedies. Here, as the fog and rain rolls in, the island takes on a haunting air, as if the land itself remembers things best left buried beneath its soggy surface.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
Now on the wrong side of forty, DS Tomek Bowen has begun to worry more about the little things. Like the food he puts in his body, how many pints he can have without feeling too hungover, and what beard dye to use for his increasingly greying hair. But now he has something more important to worry about: a thirteen-year-old daughter he knew nothing about until recently. Now he's a father, life and all its delicate intricacies have become infinitely more difficult and troublesome. On an island at constant risk of flooding, will he sink or swim?

Moonlight shines over the cottage by the river, casting a shadow over the frozen water. Panicked Ettie is shaken having discovered the chilling remains of a woman in the river, one skeletal hand reaching out from the deep water. The unknown woman was dressed to walk the rugged trails of the Lake District, so Morgan’s team assume she fell in the water and was taken by the current. But thin diagonal bruises on her neck suggest something far more sinister. A faded red rose tattoo helps Morgan identify her as a homeless woman named Martha who went missing seven years ago, and Morgan is horrified to discover Martha stole nappies and baby formula just before she disappeared. Did she have a child? Where is the poor baby now?Desperately searching through cold case files, Morgan discovers that schoolteacher Aria Burns went missing from the same busy area. But her horror quickly turns to hope when she sees the autopsy results from Martha’s frozen remains.
